Abstract
- The article discusses the ritual practices of icon and relic veneration, as well as the levels of mediation in the Byzantine era, as well as the language used by early Christian and Byzantine writers. It focuses on the works of authors John of Damascus and Theodore the Studite during the iconoclastic period. Also tackled are the modern scholars' theory of Byzantine haptic sight and the 2000 essay "To Say and to See: Ekphrasis and Vision in Byzantium," by Robert S. Nelson.
