Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis, by no means exhaustive, of the specific verbal markers making up the preacher's self-image or discursive ethos, considering the special background against which the sermon is given, which specialized orthodox literature calls parenetic (or occasional) sermon. Considering this particular homiletic genre as an argumentatively oriented speech, we think that, despite the fact that the preacher's selfimage or his discursive ethos originates less in what is explicitly uttered (dit) and more in the argumentative process taken as a whole (like dire). Nevertheless, particular punctual items, which are expressly marked in the speech, make up what Dominique Maingueneau defines as "uttered ethos": those forms of subjectivity by which the preacher actually and explicitly becomes part of his speech and refers to his self. Our analysis relies on empirical data, materialized in the text of the corpus enclosed in the paper. The paraneses that I have chosen are recorded by me in an audio-video format and transcribed observing the specific requirements set in the book Non-dialectal Current Spoken Romanian Corpus, coordinated by Luminiţa Hoarţă Cărăuşu (Cermi Publishing, Iaşi, 2005, 11-13).
