Abstract

The authors discuss the impact of Franco Basaglia, one of the most influential Italian neuro-psychiatrists in Italy, to psychiatric practice in Brazil. Topics include conceptual and historical background of Basaglia, his influence in the history of the Brazilian psychiatry since 1979, and the problems facing the mental health system in the country and how to address them.
