The title chromenes are efficiently prepared by Knoevenagel condensation of active methylene compounds with aromatic azosalicylaldehydes using piperidine as catalyst followed by nucleophilic addition of the phenolic hydroxyl group to the carbonyl group of one of the ester groups.
