Abstract

E-health is the application of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to the field of healthcare. One of the most significant branches is telemedicine, which is the use of new technologies to provide healthcare remotely. The purpose of this paper is to establish what image telemedicine has, using the theories of agenda setting and framing, both of which come from the area of communication. To do so, a content analysis of the Spanish press was carried out over 5 years (2010-2015), using both general and specialist press sources (El País, El Mundo, ABC, Diario Médico and Gaceta Médica). The results show that telemedicine is not widely covered in the media and features more often in sections other than health. The main issues which it is linked to are: developments in telemedicine and, on the other hand, input from the world of politics, with particular emphasis on the future possibilities for telemedicine.
