Abstract

The aim of the current study is to determine the metaphors that student-teachers have developed for the concept of the computer. Phenomenology which is one of the qualitative research models was used as the design of the study. The sample of the study consists of 286 student-teachers. A semi-structured questionnaire was applied to determine metaphors related to the computer developed by student-teachers. Studentteachers were asked to complete the sentences such as "Computer is like...; Because...". Content analysis was administered for the data analysis. The reliability of the study was calculated via [Consensus / (Consensus + Dissensus) x 100] and the average value of interrater reliability was found as 94%. Findings offer 123 metaphors developed by student-teachers for the concept of the computer. The most frequently pronounced metaphors are as follows: Brain, Television, Book, Cigarette, Encyclopedia, Library, Universal Information Box, Friend, Mobile Phone, and World. These metaphors were classified under 6 categories. Considering their frequencies, the metaphors were ranged as "in terms of technical structure", "in terms of habits", "socially", "emotionally", "in terms of facilitating life", and "in terms of mandatory requirements for life". It was determined that living metaphors were usually used for the concept of the computer although nonliving metaphors were also developed for it. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
