Abstract

In the paper, we present the Budker Institute long term plans for laying the plasma physics database for an advanced fuel fusion reactor based on the axisymmetric linear magnetic trap. The general approach to development of the reactor utilizes the idea that confinement of a plasma with the highest pressure can be obtained in a linear device with multi-mirror end sections attached at both ends to suppress the axial plasma losses. To develop the required database a stepwise approach is applied, which suggests construction of the several experimental devices with progressively increasing plasma parameters, which incorporate the different constituents of the approach. Ultimately, after successfully proving the ideas in the experiments, a prototype of the reactor will be constructed in the Budker Institute. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
