Abstract

The article discusses the existence of mental illness in Malawi since the colonial era, focusing on mentally abnormal prisoners in the Zomba Central Prison. It is noted that an annexe was built at the Zomba Central Prison in 1943, where patients lived a less restricted life and cooked their own food. Topics include establishment of Zomba Mental Hospital for treatment of patients with antipsychotic drugs, use of rehabilitation therapy, and introduction of Native Lunatics Ordinance Bill in 1913.
