Abstract

The article focuses on the Rocketdyne F-1 engines of the Saturn V rocket used in the Apollo 4 unmanned test flight in 1967. Topics covered include the pounds of thrust produced by each engine, a contract awarded by the U.S. Air Force to Rocketdyne for an engine that would become the F-1, and achieving the needed propulsion by placing a bomb in the combustion chamber. The Rocketdyne F-1 engine's importance in the Apollo 8 mission to the moon is also mentioned.
