Abstract

The article discusses the concepts of citizenship and conscription in the Confederate States of America during the U.S. Civil War. It examines concerns about border security among southern slaveholders, immigration reform in the Confederate Congress, and questions about the responsibilities of citizens. The article also discusses English immigrant Richard Ogden as an example of shifting Confederate attitudes concerning citizenship.
