Abstract

BACKGROUND: Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Cervix (CCE) is one of the major malignant tumors of the female lower genital tract. This malignant tumor often extends towards the walls of the uterus or spread through the angio-lymphatic system. Few cases of superficial extension have been described towards the endometrial cavity, with or without invasion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 68 year old woman who consulted for post-menopausal bleeding. The ecography showed endometrial swelling and the colposopy showed no alterations. High grade intraepithelial lesions (H-SIL) was find in exfoliative cytology. Endo-cervical and endometrial curettages were done revealing the same cytological characteristics. An anexo-hysterectomy was performed and immuhistochemical assays were made for CD138 and CD146, two markers probably connected to tumoral agressivity. RESULTS: Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Cervix with superficial spread to the endometrium of the uterus was found in the histopathological analisys. CD138 was positive only in the intraepitelial component. CD146 was negative in the neoplasia CONCLUSION: This kind of dissemination has been rarely discribed in medical literatura and its prognosis and oncological treatment remains unknown. Literature research found no cases with no lesions in colposcopy or cases which were interpreted as primary endometrial neoplasm pathology, therefore this kind of superficial spreading should be considered in a patient with endometrial swelling. The pattern of positivity for CD138 is similar to others reports. However, CD146 stain showed discrepancies with literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
