Abstract
- The article discusses the social organization of schools in Great Britain in 1800 by examining the reception history of educationalist Andrew Bell and education innovator Joseph Lancaster's experiments in mass education. Topics include the importance of the British domestic debate between Anglican educators and secular educations, the debates on Indian education and English literary studies, and Bell and Lancaster's opposition to punishing students who violated the school's rules of conduct.
