Abstract

The qualitative approach is focused on the cognitive representation about space starting from a text by Herta Müller-taken as the stimulus. The paper aims to identify the semantic network connected to space representation and to examine the space images of the target population by quantitative metrics of the actual space. Data were collected at the University of Bucharest in academic year 2014 and the questionnaires were administrated individually in paper- and- pencil format. In this paper we examine the item referring to the cognitive representation of space. The target population was invited to use the words expressing the images of space. The qualitative findings were measured in terms of quantitative metrics. The spatial language sustains the semantic network of the research in terms of philosophy of communication and meaning. The quantitative metrics of qualitative findings infer various images of space topological space, mathematic features of space, three dimensions 3D pictures, absolute space portrayal, concrete images, metaphoric images, etc. that can be processed by segmentation, invariance and distributed representations.
