Abstract

The invention of Cangaço as a genre in Brazilian cinema is rooted in the creation of the American Western film and, under its aegis, close relationships were established between them. Although each genre has been created differently, there are some familiarities in their pre-cinemas and a very strong common, a landmark: Stagecoach (John Ford, 1939) for the Western and O Cangaceiro (Lima Barreto, 1953) for the Brazilian genre. Since then, the genres were consolidated and conquered the industry. In the following decades, mass production strengthened and consolidated both genres in film industry. In the 1970s they began to decline when the dialogue with the comedy and other production models were highlighted, culminating in a crisis in the 1980s. By the end of the century, iconic films reinvigorated both genres in film production in each country. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
