Abstract

The article presents biographies and statements of candidates for the position of president of the Association of Computing Machinery Council. Being a doctorate in mathematics, Stephen R. Bourne, of Menlo Park, California-based El Dorado Ventures, is well known for his work on the UNIX operating system. Steve is a member of the ACM, IEE, and Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. In this article, he states some elements that ACM need to focus are most effective forums for communication between members, new partnerships with other professional organizations to improve effectiveness in policy making forums etc. Another candidate, A. Joseph Turner, professor in Department of Computer Science at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina, received the Outstanding Contribution to ACM Award in 1996 for contributions to computing education. Turner states that it would be a great time to be involved in a progressive organization of computer professionals.
