Abstract

Wet-nursing was a practice that lasted in Italy for several centuries and disappeared in the middle of Nineteenth century. Italian wet-nurses found job opportunities also abroad. Based on the research carried on by various scholars in specific areas, this paper provides an overview of the phenomenon according to a supra-regional perspective. The identification of departure areas (rural centers in the Alps and Appennini) and destination points (Egypt and southern France which had an old Italian community) trigger further considerations about this particular migration flow resulting from the migration of female domestic helpers, in the case of Egypt, and of the female textile workers for France.
