Abstract

This paper will engage in a multi-faceted discussion about the nature of Red Cross (RC), an institution eminently for and about peace. To that end, it will delve into its guiding principles, from the so-called ethical-legal ones to the peace principle. The latter is explicitly enshrined in the final statement of the principles of the International RC Conference held in 1965 in Vienna. Peace as a purpose, however, lies at the very heart of RC since inception, and is largely present in its guiding principles. The logical structure of the work follows three fases: a) analysis of the moral motivation of the RC, which manifest itself in its first rules and in the writings of the founders, b) for the moral motivation to the study of the nature of the etical principles of the RC, which is going slowly building in the practical order than a theoretician, highlighting the importance of the principle of peace, insito already in the former and culmination of all them, and c) the conception of the RC as an organization for peace, which is the central theme of this work. This is accomplished by leveraging four kinds of arguments: the definition of its principles, the historical development of this organization, the expert opinion of its authors and organic management, and the vision of it founder.
