Abstract

For centuries Andalusian Muslims have represented Islam in Europe. During this time they built a tremendous culture and civilization and they introduced superior humanitarian achievements of East and Islam to Europeans. They show in the best way that people can live together despite their differences. During their ruling periods, They gave rights to the different religious and ethnic groups in Europe and they have ensured them to live in peace without being subjected to any distinction. In this peaceful environment, everyone‟s rights and freedoms to live together is ensured by correctly understood and applied Islamic faith. In addition to this things which are inherent in Islam such as the importance of science, encouraging scholars for devoloping new methods and contributions of scholars to humanity using all available science methods, should not be ignored as they offered great benefits to humanity. As a result many scientists who made great contrubitions to world science history have been trained in this region during this period. Yahya b. Yahya el-Leysî (d. 849), Abbas Kasım b. Firnas (d. 888), İbn Hazm (d. 1064), İbn Abdilberr (d. 1070), Muhammed b. Rüşd (d. 1198), Muhammed b. Ahmed el -Kurtubî (d. 1273), Muhyiddin İbn-i Arabî (d. 1239), Muhammed b. Haldun (d. 1406), are just a few of these important names. İbn Hazm is the most popular one among those names and he is known as the most productive writer in Islamic World after Taberî. Both in his time and in later centuries, he had a very important position with his works and especially with his effort to codification of the Zahiri school of Islamic thought. As a “European Muslim Scholar”, Ibn Hazm‟s ideas about war and peace are important, and they should be mentioned in history of Islam in which global peace is spoken. In this paper, we will try to shed light on Ibn Hazm‟s perception of war and peace on the basis of “Kitab al -Jihad” chapter in his masterpiece al-Muhalla bi‟l-Âsâr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
