Abstract

Based on Bordwell's conclusions regarding the 1960s European art film as the cinema that “tames” avantgarde and early modernist techniques, such as stream of consciousness, the author of the paper supports the idea that Vatroslav Mimica’s Monday or Tuesday (1966) is a typical representative of such cinematic style. Moreover, he analyses the relationship between modernity and the Holocaust in Mimica’s films, or rather the use of modernist techniques in order to tackle the theme of the dark side of the rationalized, alienated and bureaucratized modernity that produced the Holocaust in the first place. Tomislav Šakić's phrase “the ongoing Holocaust” adequately describes the approach to this theme in Mimica’s insufficiently researched film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
