Abstract

The article presents information on international efforts to combat trafficking through Ukraine are piecemeal, underfunded, and do little to solve the threat to global security. Ukraine has the dubious distinction of being a country rich in natural resources, military strength, and geostrategic value, yet plagued by internal crises that keep it from attaining a respectable place on the world stage. Along with endemic corruption among the political elite, shaky relations with Western institutions, Western states, and Russia, and lackluster attempts at economic and political reform, Ukraine must also contend with being, literally, the geographic crossroads of Central and Eastern Europe.
