Abstract

Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile of congenital syphilis cases reported at basic health units of the state of Paraíba from 2007 to 2016 Methodology: Descriptive study using data from National Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) of congenital syphilis cases reported at Basic Health Units of Paraíba from 2007 to 2016. The variables included were: maternal schooling, lack of antenatal care, city of origin, partner treatment, moment of diagnosis and final classification and evolution of the cases. Results: At the period of 2007 to September of 2016, 1.237 cases of congenital syphilis were reported at the state of Paraíba. About 15% of these pregnants did not receive prenatal care and the most maternal syphilis diagnosis (50,4%) were made at delivery. In 75,7% of the cases, the treatment was inadequate and 7,7% of the cases were not treated. About 60% of the pacients, their partners were not treated. Conclusion: Syphilis is an infection with potential complications for both mother and baby, like cerebral palsy, sensorineaural hearing loss and musculoskeletal deformity. Therefore, is important to diagnostic and treat appropriately the mother and her partner to avoid vertical transmission. So, it is fundamental to improve the quality of prenatal care and delivery assistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
