The Florentine humanists of the 15th century combined public service with their work as historians. Quevedo followed that tradition from his first works like España defendida, and the Discurso de las privanzas. In 1613 he decided to travel to Italy to serve as secretary and right hand man of the Duke of Osuna, viceroy of Naples and Sicily.
