Abstract
- Reproductive traits information about Pacific pomfret (Brama australis) is scarce or not have been updated. Through histological analysis, the type of reproduction, maturity length and different gonadal stages development in males and females were studied. Specimens from the central coast of Chile were analysed. The results confirmed that females exhibited an ovary with asynchronous development, which is a characteristic of partial spawners. The adjusted model indicated that females mature, in average at 37.7 cm of fork length. Data suggests that males mature at smaller sizes compared to females. Based on the absence of recent or imminent reproductive activity in this and other studies, the hypothesis that the reproductive process of the species takes place rather off-shore, beyond the fishing zones is discussed.
