Abstract

This article is part of a larger comparison between two electronic peripherical rhythms : Champeta from Cartagena de Indias and Funk Carioca, from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. It analyses the esthetical characteristics that these two musical universes share, specifically those which make them to transgress norms of taste, moral rules and spatial divisions in two cities with high segregation levels. The article shows how these esthetical practices achieve a visibility thanks to particular corporalities and sonorities. It is especially through their parties that funk and champeta cause a temporal subversion of the established order and conquer spatialities traditionally restricted for this type of manifestations.
