Abstract

In order to better understand the impact of type III mouth guards, made by the dental surgeon in E.V.A (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) on the performance of the athlete, the present study evaluated the peripheral oxygen saturation of the volunteers in 3 stages. This measurement was performed with 10 athletes fighters of jiu-jitsu, through pulse oximetry with apparatus called oximeter. The measurements were performed in three different moments, and they were at rest, then in the post-workout without using a mouth guard with immediate measurement and finally with a minimum interval of 24 hours, in the post-training with the athletes making use of the protector oral. The data collected were tabulated and submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. It was observed that, although the average oxygen saturation was lower in the post-training sessions with the use of the protector, they did not reach critical limits, but they suggest studies to know the cause and possible improvements in the preparation of individualized protectors that will increasingly minimize this Difference between the use and non-use of the mouth guard to combine safety, comfort and performance.
