Since decades, the milk yield of dairy cows is increasing to a greater extent than feed intake. This paper reports feeding approaches that are successfully used to avoid a negative energy balance of cows. Limitations are also addressed. On the long term, re-balancing milk yield and feed intake in breeding programs is considered to be the most promising approach for avoiding negative consequences of insufficient energy supply. Thus, identification of indirect traits to quantify feed intake in a population should have high priority. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
