Abstract

A total of 27 wall specimens were tested under axial compression to investigate the compressive performance of stone masonry walls. The main test parameters included the strength of mortar, height-to-thickness ratio, and construction method (mortar-laid or dry-laid). The failure mode and load-deformation relationship of the specimens were studied. The influence of different parameters on the axial compressive capacity of stone masonry walls was investigated. During testing, crush of mortar and gaskets inside the bed joints as well as split of stone blocks were observed for all specimens, and the failure exhibited brittle features. The results show that when the height-to-thickness ratio is no more than 5.75, more gaskets inside the joints can effectively increase the load carrying capacity of the dry-laid specimens. With all other parameters set as the same, the mortar-laid specimens have higher stiffness and compressive strength than the dry-laid specimens. Finally, a formula, which takes into account the influence of height-to-thickness ratio, is proposed to predict the load carrying capacity of the dry-laid stone masonry walls, and the calculated results agree well with the test results.
