Bodies, pornography and the circumscription of sexuality: A new materialist study of young people’s sexual practices.

We explore ‘sexualisation’ from a new materialist position, as an assemblage of bodies, things, ideas and social institutions. Interview data on 22 young people’s sexual activities reflect a range of relations and ‘affects’ contributing to the sexualisation of young people, including peers, social events, alcohol, media, popular culture and pornography. While a ‘sexualisation-assemblage’ may produce any and all capacities in bodies, it is typically blocked and restricted into narrow and circumscribed capacities. Limited and unimaginative practices portrayed in sexualised media and pornography narrow definitions of sexuality, and may reproduce and reinforce misogyny, sexual objectification and circumscribed sexualities.
