Abstract

The article presents information about culture and life of people in Brazilian town of Campos Eliseos. The town is one of the poorest parish in the diocese of Duque de Caxias, which is the poorest diocese in the state of Rio de janeiro. Most people in Campos Eliseos do not think about God much. They think about the dark spirits of Macumba and Umbanda and the other Afro-Brazilian cults, who will protect them from one another, and then they think about Mary, who will forgive them for the dark spirits. The gates in Canipos Eliseos are family totems. They announce the status of the people who live behind them, and the intensity of their fear. There is Parish house in the town, which was built by Italian priests who arrived there in 1967. The article also discusses about problems of Black Catholics and Roman Catholics in the area.
