Abstract

The author of the paper displays and questions theatralization strategies present in the American TV serial Twin Peaks (1990-91) by David Lynch and Mark Frost. Influenced by the tradition of the avant-garde, Twin Peaks is ripe with procedures often linked to theatre involving overacting, hyper-dramatization, frequent use of static frames, presence of the motif of the stage, etc. The characteristics of those procedures are analysed with the help of the insights into film and theatre studies by Hrvoje Turković, Tracy C. Davis and Thomas Postlewait, and with a special reference to psychoanalytic considerations by Elizabeth Freedman, according to whom theatralization is realized within a special relationship between the audience and a specific audio-visual work, based on the spectators' experience of the so-called stare, creepy duplications and tragic blindness, recognizable also in Twin Peaks. Having a pronounced potential to provide insight and to encourage audience to approach fiction and reality in a critical manner, theatralization procedures represent an important stylization characteristic of the serial which contributed greatly to its artistic and historical relevance.
