Abstract

The article discusses the legal case of a U.S. citizen known as John Doe who has been indefinitely detained by the U.S. government for allegedly working for the military group ISIS in Syria. Topics include the use of the 2001 U.S. Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) as a legal justification for U.S. military involvement in various conflicts, the distinction between the military organizations Al Qaeda and ISIS, and actions by the organization American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of the U.S. citizen who was detained.
