Abstract

The article offers information on teaching addition and subtraction involving negative numbers. Topics discussed include contextualise the mathematics and understanding considers negative numbers as a quantity of a collection of objects; exploring the number-line model to show how it supported children’s understanding; and using balloons for number calculation.
