Abstract
- The article discusses an effort by kidnapped sailor William Tillman to win his freedom from Confederate privateers after they had captured his ship, the S.J. Waring. Topics include his use of a hatchet to kill the privateers, newspaper coverage of the mutiny led by Tillman, and a legal judgment awarding Tillman and other sailors a share in the salvage value of the ship.
