Abstract

This article introduces the concept of “developmental moments,” which are moments throughout a session where the clinical material, along with the therapist's countertransference, provide guideposts for assessing the patient's immediate developmental need. When integrated with modern analytic contact styles, the developmental moment helps the analyst identify which maturational tasks are likely to play out in the interpersonal field at any given time and when interventions are most likely to help the client progress in treatment.
