Abstract

Within the era of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) there is a cross fertilization between railway engineering and Information Technology, which requires the utilization of vertically integrated knowledge overtaking the paradigms of the classical engineering. The availability of innovative technologies and huge amount of data are the key factors able to revolutionize maintenance in the 21st century. Thanks to the vertically integrated development of IP smart sensors, computational performances, Big Data and analytics frameworks, the rail transport is made more punctual, cost-efficient and safer. This paper provides a brief introduction to the predictive maintenance within the rail sector, emphasizing railway engineering elements, Information Technology and data mining aspects, and business implications obtainable through this innovative framework.
