Abstract
- The article features First Lieutenant Marina A. Hierl, the first woman in the U.S. Marine Corps to lead an infantry platoon. Hierl is one of the platoon commanders in Echo Company sent to the Northern Territory of Australia for training exercises and to act as a response force for the Pacific region. The Marine Corps allowed women into its infantry ranks in 2015 after initially resisting the Defense Department's order in 2013 to include women in combat roles.
