Abstract

This article presents information on National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA's) endeavor to develop advanced jet engines. An experimental unmanned jet called the X-43 is being readied for a dash at the edge of space which could reach a speed of 5,000 miles per hour, seven times the speed of sound. If tested successfully it could become the first nonrocket, air-breathing plane to reach hypersonic speeds, a development engineers hope could lead to sending payloads into space much more cheaply or to aircraft that could whisk people to any point in the world within two hours.
