Recognized in 2016 as the Writer of the Year in Queer Literature by the LGBTT Community Center of Puerto Rico, Yolanda Arroyo Pizarro is considered one of the most important lesbian authors in Puerto Rico. Although in her works she dialogues with island and diasporic pioneers such as Nemir Matos-Cintrón, Lilliana Ramos-Collado, and Luz María Umpierre, her creative and intellectual activities challenge the forced disappearance of lesbians and the myth of lesbian invisibility on the island and also highlight black experience. One of the examples is her novel Violeta (2013). This work undermines the heterosexual matrix of Puerto Ricanness, which promotes monogamy, heteropatriarchal family, and the experiences of kinships and motherhood as forcefully imposed on feminine sexuality. The sexual dissidence of Arroyo Pizarro's lesbian characters favors the creation of sexually diverse environments and polyamory, while the juxtaposition of their erotic autonomy and racial tensions makes visible the experiences of Afro-Puerto Rican lesbians.
