Abstract

Hepatopulmonary Syndrome (HPS) is characterized by impairment in blood oxygenation due to intrapulmonary vascular dilatations and shunting in the context of liver disease. Prevalence in patients waiting for a liver transplantation ranges between 4% to 32%. We still know little about the pathogenesis of this condition, since the majority of information has been obtained in animal models. Although HPS is usually asymptomatic, some patients may complain exertional dyspnea and platypnea, impacting on their quality of life and prognosis. Currently no effective medical treatment for HPS exists. Only liver transplantation has been shown to reverse the syndrome and improve survival rates. The aim of this paper is to provide an exhaustive overview on HPS, including the diagnosis and management of this condition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
