Abstract

By the number of cultural-archaeological sites, Municipality of Posušje is one of the richest municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also in the wider region. This municipality is known for its architectural heritage and the art of stone quarrying from prehistoric times to today. According to the last list of archaeological sites dating from 1988, 40 medieval necropolises of "stećci", medieval tombstones, were noted in the Municipality of Posušje. According to the written sources and official data we have 16 quarries (active and non active), and this article will for the first time analyse the spatial framework and the connectivity of the necropolis, as well as the way of transportation of "stećci". It will be attempted to give an overview of the possible routes to which "stećci" were transported to the destination, the site foreseen for the necropolises. Some of quarries even today preserve traces of native areas of the making of with examples that are carved, ornamented and ready for transport which unfortunately had never been accomplished, but serve us as a confirmation of human creation and art in the Late Middle Ages in an area rich in stone resources.
