Abstract

The objective of the present study was to verify the relationship between bone age and young rowers explosive strength. Seventy-six adolescents (37 boys and 38 girls) aged between 8 and 14 years old participated in this study. Skeletal age was estimated using a predictive mathematical model based on anthropometric variables. Upper limbs explosive strength was assessed through medicine ball throwing test and lower limbs explosive strength through horizontal jump test. Late maturational staged boys obtained lower performance in both tests when compared with the normal stage (ULES: U = 42.50, p <0.001, LLES: U = 87.00 p = 0.027); as well as normal staged girls presented lower performance in relation to their early pairs (ULES: U= 26,00; p<0,001; LLES: U=10,00; p<0,001); significant positive coefficients relationships (r> 0.7) were found between bone age and upper and lower limb explosive strength performance for both sexes. It was verified that skeletal age estimation has a very strong relationship with upper and lower limbs explosive strength performance, regardless of sex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
