Abstract

Besides milk yield and fitness, meat performance is important for life efficiency in German Fleckvieh (FL) and German Brown Swiss (BV). So far, data from young bulls are mainly considered for breeding value estimation. The aim of the present study is to investigate to what extent the breeding value estimation can be improved by adding slaughterhouse data of female animals as well as calf marketing data. In addition to the traits net daily gain and the trading class considered in the routine breeding value estimation, genetic parameters for the traits of daily gain (calf) and marketing price (calf price/kg) were estimated for FL and BV. A breeding value estimation with different density of performance information was performed. The trait daily gain (calf) has a medium (FL) or high (BV) heritability and is suitable as an auxiliary trait, due to a medium genetic correlation with the net daily gain. The heritabilities of the marketing price (calf price/kg) are low and the trait is influenced by many factors not previously recorded. Therefore this trait does not meet the requirements for auxiliary traits. In breeding value estimation, the ranking of the animals has hardly changed due to the inclusion of female slaughter data and/or calf marketing data. With addition of new information sources and traits, the reliability of the breeding value estimation only increases by 1.0%. When simulating optimal data, reliability increases by 9.1%. This shows, how important the performance test is in different traits for the meat complex. Further work is required in regard of the completeness of the performance data, eventually financial support for the trait recording is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
