Abstract

The intensive care unit (ICU) is a special place in the hospital, just like intensive care is a special branch of medicine. Therapy in such units should always be interdisciplinary. Nursing is a key component of therapy, which in many cases a plays major role in the process of improving the patient's general condition. Surgical patients constitute about half of ICU patients. Hospitalization in ICU per se poses a risk of complications, regardless of other events which may appear as a consequence of underlying pathology and its treatment. Accordingly, therapy of this group of patients poses a challenge for highly qualified personnel. Regardless of guidelines and literature publications it is worth remembering that each patient requires an individual approach towards diagnosis and treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
