Abstract
- The article offers information on the current literacy debate about possible means of teaching early reading. Topics discussed include teachers and teacher educators being resistant to using phonics as a method of teaching early reading; restricting word choices and inferior to real books by decodable readers in phonic programs; and endorsing a single approach to early reading in the form of synthetic phonics.
