Abstract

In the last decade, the universe of video games has been the focus of many researchers around the world. Recent research points to the possible positive aspects or impairments generated by electronic games. Many authors are using games that are developed to improve the cognition of both healthy population and individuals with a specific pathology. This systematic review follows the steps of Prisma statement, aiming to investigate cognitive training effects of multiple entertainment video games on healthy adults' cognition. After the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 17 papers were selected from PubMed, Scielo, Scopus, Web of Science and Bvs databases. Main findings indicate that the electronic games of puzzle and platform genre improve the executive functions, mainly working memory. Moreover, action and real-time strategy video games tend to stimulate multiple cognitive functions simultaneously. However, no cognitive improvement was observed in real-life simulators. This review highlights that non-action games may enhance cognitive functions of healthy adults. Therefore, it is essential to conduct more studies that contemplate the different genres of existing games. Finally, it is unknown whether two games of the same genre will stimulate the same cognitive function in equal proportion, thus, it is important to conduct studies with different games of the same genre.
