Abstract

There is a large body of research on hybrid organisations and interactions between multiple logics in social enterprises and non-profit organisations, but there are few studies in this area that are related to higher education and healthcare fields. Some scholars claims that hybridity downgrades organisational performance, while others suggest that hybridity can strengthen organisations, making them more sustainable and innovative. The investigation of this problem is main subject of the paper. The aim of this paper is to investigate what we know already, and what we should know more about, in terms of the relations between multiple logics in hybrid public organisations in HE and health. We contribute to the literature on hybridity and institutional logics by highlighting and comparing hybridity logic in two different public sectors. Governments aiming at "cost containment with improved quality" and the increased effectiveness and efficiency of healthcare and HEI systems, employed managers at various level. The managers were expected to introduce business-like governance and control practices to the public healthcare sector, but also HEI sector. These initiatives, however, have not constrained the growth of costs, which have been faster than GDP growth for many years now. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
