Abstract

Menopause, which is a 12-month-period of amenorrhoea after the last menstrual cycle, is a physiological state as a result of the failure of overian functions and declining in oestrogen levels together with the chronological aging. Various cosmetological concerns including a decrease in the skin thickness and laxity as well as wrinkles occur secondary to the decline in the dermal collagen content and elasticity due to hipooestrogenemic state. In addition, several conditions impairing quality of life are usually seen in this period such as atrofic vulvovaginitis, lichen sclerosus, vulvodynia and keratoderma climactericum due to the physiological changes in mucosae and the genitourinary system. In this article, menopausal pathophysiology and its consequences on the skin has been reviewed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
