Abstract
- This article presents the Altar of Sts. Cyril and Methodius from the collections of the Moravian Gallery in Brno. The triptych from 1851 with the central painting of Pieta and the figures of Sts. Cyril and Methodius on the side wings was commissioned by Bedřich Count Silva-Tarouca from Josef Vojtěch Hellich, a Czech artist and patriot, for the chapel of the Neglected Youth's Home in Brno. The paper charts the circumstances surrounding the origin of the altar considered one of the first modern paintings with the subject of Sts. Cyril and Methodius. Its artistic forms reflect the painter's leanings towards realistic tendencies in visual art around the mid-19th century. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
