Abstract: The article presents a study which examines the contribution of anthropogenic climate change to the likelihood of an extreme summer heat wave, like the summer 2017 in western Europe and Euro-Mediterranean. It explores the return period and changing risk of heat waves as well as looks at the 3-day-mean area-averaged daily maximum temperatures. The trends in the likelihood of 3-day heat waves are noted.
