Abstract

If today's maps are compared to the renaissance maps (between 14 and 16 century AD), the latter are much more richly ornamented. A large amount of decorative content is presented on them, from the animals and the people on the shore to the ships and the sea monsters at sea. In this paper we highlight why the sea monsters can be found in medieval and renaissance maps, and why later they disappeared from them. Maps with the sea monsters of Magnus, Mercator and Ortelius from the 16th century are described, which significantly influenced on the appearance of the sea monsters on other maps from that time.
